‘Using Teleroute to optimise load factor’

Vos Deventer is a healthy transport company with over 160 truck heads and more than 200 trailers and it wants to seize the opportunities for growth that will arise in the next few years. Besides its branch in Deventer, the company has also had a branch in Groningen since 2009. Jules Menheere has been manager there since 2009, and he works closely together with Jerome Vos, who is operational manager at the company.

Jules Menheere, General Manager at Vos Deventer, wanted to be his own boss for many years. He got that opportunity some years ago at the company in Deventer. Menheere has clearly taken Vos in the right direction. Sustainability and one hundred per cent certainty on knowing where you want to go as a company are the key words in his story. Deploying Teleroute is also a part of this in terms of strategy. “We use Teleroute to optimise the load factor.” At Vos Deventer, sustainability is written in capital letters.  The transport company was already awarded with the Lean & Green Award. Menheere wants to talk about how Vos is dealing with business in a sustainable way: “The better your load factor, the greener you run. And we have now been fully running vehicles equipped with a Euro 5 engine for nearly two years. We also built in Eco boxes in December 2010, meaning we are able to remotely correct the driving behaviour of the drivers.  Thanks to these boxes, we can also monitor fuel consumption. It does take some time to measure everything accurately, but when you put some energy into this, you will easily pick up a few percent savings on your fuel consumption. And I think we should manage to eventually take this to  five to ten percent.” Menheere also notes additional advantages; driving more effectively should also reduce damage and reduce maintenance costs. 

Optimising load factor through Teleroute 

An important part of a greener operation is optimising the load factor. If the planners at Vos notice that there is too much freight to be transported, they put the extra freight on Teleroute. “Some imbalance might also occur; we will then charter out the part that we are unable to transport easily ourselves,” says Menheere. “Time and again we look for the most efficient solution. We often manage to solve matters with regular contacts, but we also use Teleroute regularly. ”This not only applies to the Deventer branch, but we also regularly use Teleroute at our forwarding offic in Groningen.”

According to Menheere, sustainability and practical operation go hand in hand at his company. “We use Teleroute in particular to see whether we would be able to make better combinations. If there is anything on it that is better than what we ourselves haveto transport, then we exchange it. This may result in us sourcing out a load in Berlin and accepting another one in Dresden. This way, we have been able to increase our turnover and improve our loading level. I think we are doing well, anyway; the loading level of our trailers is quite good.” According to the manager of this transport company,Teleroute contributes to trailers being loaded better. “You should think of the platform contributing to optimisation in the order of several per cent that.”

Security check saves time

Vos Deventer operates for a number of reputable clients and wants to avoid any risks. “As with our clients, we feel very strongly about security. We put quite a lot of energy in filtering loads and charters and, as far as I am concerned, Teleroute has the best reputation among all comparable freight exchange systems.”  The security check standard provided by Teleroute with the platform is an ideal solution, according to Menheere. “As soon as we are informed that something is wrong, we put someone on ‘red’ to enable us to check what is wrong.” The credit crunch has also resulted in a moreintensive use of the security check. Menheere has certainly noted an increase in the use of Teleroute since the crisis. “Our planners love to use the platform; checking transporters on it is so easy that it even saves them time.”

Sustainable policy is quite advantageous

The sustainable policy of Vos Deventer has been quite advantageous for the company. It has a sound  nancial base, serves virtuallyally corners of Europe, but only drives to a few surrounding countries and Scandinavia. There are no ambitions to drive outside Europe. “It is not cost-effective to go to really distant destinations. We make clearcut choices for each destination. We deploy regular charters to areas where Vos does not go with its own vehicles.” Menheere is quite positive about an expansion from the current 160 to 200 truck heads in the near future. “This expansion will indeed occur. Additionally, we are also looking around to increase the number of branches. I expect to be able to report something in this area this year (2011). Apart from a takeover, we also expect to grow five to ten per cent autonomously. Things are simply going well, but this is a result of anticipating properly and knowing exactly what the consequences are of everything you do.”
